Needs Assessment
The objective of Work Package 1 (WP1) is to assess the needs of developing countries and disaster-response agencies for microbiological testing of drinking water. These needs should be addressed against the background of international guidelines and standards, and the water and sanitation target of the Millennium Development Goals. They will take into account all stakeholders’ views, including donors, and the relationship to drinking-water quality surveillance practices, such as water safety plans or national/global routine monitoring (e.g. WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation).
WP1 will:
- Assess the needs of national monitoring systems in developing countries;
- Assess the needs of international reporting and monitoring systems;
- Undertake a regional assessment in southern Africa;
- Assess the water quality testing needs in disaster and emergency situations, both in developing and developed countries;
- Summarise the principal environmental parameters in which water quality testing will be performed.
Details of activities being undertaken in the next phase of the Aquatest research programme may be found here.
